Technical Writer

Positions available in Mountain View, CA / Santa Monica, CA / New York, NY / Kirkland, WA.

Google is growing! The software engineering group is looking for the very best technical writers to document a diversity of software-related topics, including overviews, procedures, APIs, and more. We are looking for writers of all levels of seniority who are passionate about technical writing and who write excellent documentation.

When everyone else is asking "How do I...", do you figure it out and write it up? Does your documentation set off light bulbs for your readers? When you're documenting the getResults function, do you discover and document all the possible results rather than just saying "gets the results"? Do you suggest ways to improve the function? When you find yourself repeating a task too many times, do you devise a way to do it automatically? Have you played around with the query parameters to a Google search request just for fun?

If so, send us your resume!

Responsibilities will include:

  • Organize Google's internal documentation and make it accessible and useful to everyone at Google.
  • Write software documentation for internal and external customers, including "How To" guides, reference manuals, user guides, technical overviews, architecture overviews, procedures and more.
  • Organize existing documents, identify documentation holes and spearhead efforts to fill them in.
  • Edit, clarify and proofread documents written by engineers.
  • Coach engineers on ways to improve their writing skills.
  • Mentor less experienced writers.
Requirements:
  • Proven track record of researching and writing the very best software documentation.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passionate about learning and documenting new technologies.
  • Ability to read source code in languages such as Java or C++.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
Preferred experience and skills:
  • Ability and inclination to write your own sample code.
  • Experience working with search engines and ad systems.
  • Experience coaching engineers to help them improve their own writing skills.
  • Experience writing scripts or building tools to improve the process of generating documentation.
