Hardware Operations Training/Documentation Manager

Position available in Mountain View, CA.

The Hardware Operations department at Google is responsible for the operation of all of Google's production computing resources and datacenters. With our rapid growth and international expansion, we require a central person to develop, coordinate, and manage multi-region cross-department documentation, online training, and process analysis and improvement.

While the primary customer for the person in this role is the Hardware Operations technicians and administrators, this role will require extensive interaction with Engineering and Product Management, as well as HR and Finance. The person selected for this role must quickly establish credibility with key people on these teams.

The person in this role will need to recruit as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities and deliverables. In the meantime, s/he will need to work as an individual contributor to meet high-priority needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a strategic communications resource and advisor to Hardware Operations management and teams. Collaborate with management to develop online training and certification modules for Operations Technicians.
  • Work with a variety of teams across Google to identify editorial needs to communicate the operational processes and procedures of new products and systems.
  • Write training materials, website content, and other materials as needed.
  • Establish and maintain procedures to ensure consistency and accuracy of the processes and procedures across datacenters and regions.
  • Defines and maintains innovative channels for timely distribution of information such as intranet and email communications, newsletters, etc.
  • Develop a team to handle the expanding responsibilities of this role.
Requirements:
  • Strong technical skills in Networking and System Administration.
  • Experience in delivering training to technical personnel.
  • Extensive experience as a writer in a professional environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and a razor-sharp attention to detail.
  • Ability to compose all types of writing for varied audiences on demand.
  • Proven managerial and teamwork skills.
  • Flexibility to handle demands of a rapidly growing and changing workplace.

Tech Talk Transcriber

Position based in Mountain View, CA.

Two years experience in the transcription of technical information from audio tapes; proficient in grammar and spelling, some familiarity with technical jargon a plus, although ability to learn quickly on the job is more important.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, careful attention to detail and ability to learn network-based file transfer and file sharing processes. Should also have some editing background, and be familiar with common word- processing tools. Experience with HTML documents a plus.
