General Discussion - Another "Post Your Sprites Here" Thread

Post subject: Another "Post Your Sprites Here" Thread
Can someone sticky this thread this time around? I remember we had one stickied pre-wipe, but since then our sprite threads have always slipped into Page 2 And Beyond after thirty seconds, making them worthless.

Anyway, yeah. Post sprites of yourself here. This way, Kulock can find your sprites if he wants to put you in an MC Dash!, as can other people doing comics. It's also useful for any artists who feel like drawing MCers, as they have reference material available. Basically, this thread increases your chances of becoming "famous". :P

Post a link to a spritesheet, or you can inline the image if it's relatively small. Do not say "my sig", as sigs change, and this thread is no good if a week from now half the links are gone because they were in sigs that were changed. Do not point us to your sidepic for the same reason. These are not rules, but they should still be followed for your own benefit.

I guess I'll start us off with Andrusi's Spritesheet Mark Five.
At first this was just going to be adding a "looking up" sprite in response to Kulock's complaint, but it turned into a full-blown overhaul, with several sprites added and a buttload of them slightly changed. (I fixed a couple of errors I made over and over with the goggles, and also redrew the eyes on some sprites.) I've also added sprites of Andrusi's two current evil twins and my rendition of Mecha Tails, as well as Andrusi's NGPC sheet (not that anyone actually uses NGPC sprites). In short, if you have an Andrusi sheet already, it's old, get this one.

(take note 2/17/05: first four slightly edited)

train sprites are here, the ones without 'a' and 'b' on the end of the filename are the best to use.

I always wanted to be used in the various community comics such as The Horror or MC Dash, but I lack a proper identifying sprite. Now, when I first took the surname of Jinnai, I was a little off-kilter, having various emotional issues, being very angry and somewhat senseless, just like good ol' Jinnai. But now that I've mellowed out, I'm really nothing like Jinnai in any manner. So I suggested making a cardboard cutout Jinnai that I would be hiding behind (and would mysteriously change expressions per context but never actually needing explanation as to why, naturally.) It's actually pretty good there, but it never seemed to get the motivation to thrive.

BUT NOW THE TIME HAS COME.

Ah, it's good old IK+ (International Karate +, sequel to International Karate), a classic 2D fighter for the Amiga, C64 and other consoles of the time. An utter classic for reasons such as: 3 simulateous fighters, brilliantly and often comically animated backgrounds, fluid animation and gameplay, wide variety of moves, clear control scheme, great collision detection with hard cutting sound effect, brilliant fun game, and the most advanced, most recognised feature of them all, pressing the "T" key makes the trousers fall down on all stationary fighters!
I loved this game despite not being hugely into fighting games, it was just fun, enjoyable to play and I loved how it didn't take itself too seriously while giving some solid Kung Fu action.

Don't feel too overwhelmed, Sabator. You're doing custom edits from several parts of other sprites. He simply used a color replacer tool in his art program to repalette the Advance 3 Tails spritesheet. It's an easy way to have a lot of sprites for your avatar, but they look far less unique compared to something custom. (No offense intended, JJames.)

Bit quick to jump into things, no?

MC Dash is a comic by Kulock, the main guy around here. You might notice it on the front page of the Moogle Cavern's main website.

How to make sprites?
First, decide what you want your charaacter to look like.
Then, open MS Paint.
Next, import a sprite that most resembles what you want to look like.
After that, make the neccesary edits to customise the character to look like how you want it.
Finally, save and quit.

IT'S THAT EASY

No, it's not.
1) Don't use the default MS Paint colors. Ever. Even the black. The white's okay, but don't use it on the sprite AND the background.
2) Recolors are bad. *gets stared at* <.< Just don't recolor much...
3) Don't resize sprites...or, if you want to go for that pixelated look, strech it using Strech/Skew and multiples of 100. Preferable multiplied by a power of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, etc), but don't make changes when it's pixelated, unless you know what you're doing.
3) Shading, shading, shading. No-one likes solid color sprites...except the people who did the sprites in Sonic Advance....Well, I don't!
4) Never save as a JPeg. Save as a PNG is possible.
5) Remember to use a standardized palette, preferably with less than 16 colors. Don't use "similar looking" colors, use the exact same color.
6) There is no #6.

None taken! To be honest, about a quarter of the sprites were recolored through MSPaint. I only realized the repaletter until a friend told me about it. ;_; All of my sprites from now on will be done with MSPaint though. I really hate using art prgrams like photoshop as they don't display your true skill. (I bet that Hyper Sonic in Sonic X hoax was easy with photoshop. XP) I have gotten better at spriting so I might add little nicks and nacks to my sprites. (I still wanna press the fact that I am no artist though.) If you look on the bottom of the sheet you can see that I at least made SOME effort. I recolored some items and tried to make the letters different. (Tried to spell my name but to no avail. -_-) Also, my character is supposed to represent me; just a forboding image of someone else. Much like SonKnuck. (Nice to know I'm not alone.)

Though if I really wanted to be a shadow, I could just be Shafox. =D

Hol, i'd recommend spending a LOT of time of your sprites. A sprite is something that you use to represent yourself on the internet, in webcomics, and suchforth. It's not something you throw around like a forum avatar. Think about it, if YOU were just a recolour of Quake, you wouldn't feel very different, would you? Having a unique sprite showcases you as a unique person. And having a good sprite showcases your artistic talents. If you go into a webcomic with a heavily edited tails sprite with a helmet and wings and Sonic shoes and tons of other customization options, then whoever looks at your sprite would know you have good skill.

Thanks for the morale boost, Kulock. I'm actually very proud of Sabator, considering he was my first ever sprite attempt.

And JJames, I would recommend "Do not question, Just accept".

Ok, here's some constructive criticism for that sprite. You need to take more care and precision in the work. What I would do is zoom in, and go pixel by pixel until anything Megaman (like his helmet or boots) is covered up by your hair or pants or whatever you're putting in.

Another option would be to use a sprite with similar clothing to what you're looking for (Megaman without Helmet, perhaps) and just recolour instead, which is a lot easier.

I think a bunch of it stems from a common misunderstanding. And it doesn't help that MSPaint's help file is so severely lacking... without the advice of an experienced Painter you'd never figure out half the things it can do. (Especially Paint XP. Did anyone know it could do antialiasing?)

When you resize an entire image, it antialiases as needed. If you're enlarging it in even multiples you won't see it, but when shrinking things you'll generally see some antialiasing.

When you resize just part of an image, on the other hand, it resizes the same way it always did. So you have options.

Mostly my old Mega Man crap with ears and a tail, but in the upper-righthand corner's my new stuff.

Its not that hard to shade an 8 bit sprite to be 16, which might be what he done.

Okay...so what SITE did you get the sprites from?
Also, I did try shading an 8-bit Red Mage once. The results were disastrous. Okay, so it's not THAT bad, but it's not very good.

Most of the MC's oldbies havent been in it.

I've used the sprites of every single MCer I had since my HD crash that I had more than one of, or at least one appropriate one (like Leo). If an oldbie wasn't in the Birthday/25 Comics installment, that either means I had NO sprites for them, or I had just one so awkwardly posed that I couldn't use it.

Not quite understanding that one. Going to start your own project if you don't get put in MC Dash (you're welcome to do so, either way), or are you talking about IMP, or...?

I don't like the "Photoshop doesn't show someone's true skills", though, Photoshop is NOT an easy beast to tame, and it still takes a LOT of work and creativity to depict what you want to depict, just because the tools may better accomodate your tastes and working style doesn't mean you have no skill in comparison. I think I'm fairly good at this point, and I could _manage_ with decent edits in MS Paint, but I use Paint Shop Pro (specifically 7) because I prefer the interface and tools available, and am used to how they work.

Yeah but MSPaint is nothing but the bare essentials. You're forced to do almost everything pixel-by-pixel and that leads to true pixel art which gets noticed. Whereas in Photoshop you can use lots of stuff where you can alter colors and change lots of different pixels at a time. Making lots of good shading with MSPaint also gives you a good eye for different colors. You're not really doing much pixel work if you use Photoshop's tools alot. =\

Hey, when I do pixel art, the only tools I use are flood fill, select (sometimes magic wand) and 1px Pencil. I do all the anti-aliasing manually, and even large patterns manually (see http://www.deviantart.com/view/9886428/). Well, sometimes I do fancy Photoshop stuff, but that usually only for BGs in my comic, and special effects in my comic. That's it. I could make a S3&K style Lukos soon. AND NO SAdvance STYLE LUKOS. EVER.

OMG EDIT!]
YOU ASK AND I KILL YOU!
And that thing in the corner is from when I tried to scratch Lukos. Yeeeeeah. icon_sweatdrop.gif

I finally got round to making a spritesheet. Now all i have to do is wait until people like me and I can be in a webcomic!

Ah, screw it, that'll never happen. And the first person to make the "Palm Tree" joke about my facing sprite is getting punched.

He's probably going to put more prites in it later. In fact, I do that from time to time. o_o Anyways, I noticed something's a tad wrong with the third sprite in sabator's sheet. The top quill seems to have an extra line or two of pixels or something above it. Or something. It looks lke something is protruding out of his head.... O_o

These were made about three years ago, back when I still thought that fancharacters were neat. They're actually pretty good for a 12 year old first timer in 2002. I have an incomplete SPA sheet that's somewhere on my HD. Maybe I'll upload it one day.

And Matt's sprites encompass the entire plot of a comic. I'd make it up, but... you know... that... I mean... I'd have to... you know. Do something.

You know, I haven't felt like depicting some people in funny roles in the past few days, can't think of why. Getting caught up in certain kinds of debates that won't die sometimes suck the will to be funny right out of you.

I would very much appreciate it if some more people would post their sprites here. I'm trying to populate GGG with some actual MCers, and I'm finding that my choices are rather limited. I've actually been mining a few comics to try to get some more elusive sprites. (It's odd... I never used to have trouble finding H Hog's sprites, for instance.)

On a related note, MC Dash! #25 is coming up as a broken image for me. Anyone else getting that?
