Actually, ANIME can only be made in Japan. American animation is the crappy cartoons. (No offense to those who like them.)
And anime is only AIRED or SOLD in America. And if it's bad, then it was badly made in Japan, or the people who brought it to America did a crappy job dubbing and censoring (HEX, HEX!) it. (Dragon Ball Z, anyone?)

Funimation did horrid things to it, though. They killed it with the new music, the kiddy dialogue, and THE CENSORING... (See, I'm not a perv, I just like things "untampered with.")
I've seen the Japanese uncut, and I thought the music, voices, opening/closing, and everything else were better.

Actually, anime is really a type of "animation," not cartoon. A "cartoon is really only another form of animation, completely different from anime.

Here's my breakdown...

Types of Animation

- Cartoons (American animation; usually only comedic; each episode of a series is individual; targeted towards kids; often animated picture by picture; often badly drawn; often popular for being a "good laugh")

- Anime (Japanese animation; can be any genre; episodes in series usually run in order; targeted towards everyone; usually animated character on cell over background; usually popular for characters, music, etc.)

- Disney Animated (usually comedic; much action in climaxes; targeted towards families)

- Computer Animated (least common type; often like Japanese anime; usually more mature than cartoons, but not as mature as anime)

Bah...
...the earlier dubbed seasons of DBZ may have been bad (I have not seen anything before the Frieza (sp?) Saga), the Frieza (again sp?) Saga was at least presentable, and the current season (Season 4 is it?) absolutely rules. Anyone who does not think so should be eaten alive for being too picky. ^_^

Actually, if you've ever seen the Japanese version of DBZ, you'll notice that Funimation changed the music, opening, closing, censored DBZ, and added some bad voices.

In the Saiyajin & Namek Sagas, there was crappy music, and far too much censoring was done. The famous voice actors didn't do too bad of a job, though.
However, when Funimation did the Ginyuu, Frieza, Garlic Jr., and Cell Sagas, they got horrible, new, unknown voice actors from a cheap recording studio in Texas. (Notice how Frieza sounded like a transvestite?) Also, they completely redid the music, opening, and closing. (What ever happened to Cha La Head?!) Next, they rewrote the dialogue. And there's still the censoring. Finally, to top it off, they overhype it with the cheesiest merchandise. (DBZ shot glasses? -_-*) It's a disgrace to the true masterpiece of Akira Toriyama, especially with other less-tampered-with anime on TV. (i.e. "Tenchi Muyo," and the aired-uncut "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing;" Cartoon Network's got some big "kahunas" for doing that!)

Myself, I've moved into a higher class of "otakuism," by becoming obsessed with Ranma 1/2, Rurouni Kenshin, and other fine anime. DBZ, though, has been Americanized from a high-quality Japanese anime, to a crap-quality American cartoon. Maybe I'd change my mind if I saw the subbed DVDs, but I'd rather waste my money on something useful like a CD by J-Pop group "DoCo."
I speak highly of the Japanese version (except I'd prefer if Goku would stay dead, and Mirai Trunks-kun was more in the spotlight...), but AVOID THE FUNI CRAP AT ALL COSTS! Search around some DBZ fan pages, and you'll quickly learn about what you've been deprived of. Damn Funimation...

Because if they did smoke pot, they'd get smart, and wouldn't screw with DBZ! They'd leave it as is, and would release it subtitled and uncensored on Cartoon Network! They would think of all the otaku who began to hate it for what they did to it. I remember seeing a banner about how Chibi Trunks-kun hated Funi's version of DBZ. It showed the Funimation logo being crossed out, and switched to a picture of Chibi Trunks flipping Funi the bird! It would go great in Scott Prower's "Hall of Birds" on Kyoui Ao (his page: www.geocities.com/scottprower1/kyouiao.html), but I heard that the banner might have been illegal. Dang...

Actually, Nik, I'm comparing the crappy dub DBZ with the Japanese version AND other anime that hasn't been screwed up nearly as much as DBZ.
Here's what I mean:
DBZ: censoring, music screwed up (at least the Japanese version had some CD-worthy music instead of Funi's "Rock the Dragon" & the new guitar crap); all dialogue screwed up (i.e. Mr. Satan= Hercule, Heaven= next dimension, Hell= "Home for Infinite Losers"); voices screwed up (Frieza in America sounds like a transvestite); and worst of all; TRUNKS-KUN'S DEATH WAS TONED DOWN TO A MEER 30 SECONDS AT THE END OF THE EPISODE, NO TOUCHING DRAMA AT ALL!!!

Now let's look at some other on-TV anime:
Tenchi: occasional nuditiy censored (and well censored so that it looks almost as if it were in the original), occasional "bird" taken out (see Scott Prower's page for some examples...)
Gundam Wing: occasional blood & language taken out in cut version; uncut version untouched!

And don't forget, Funimation gyps all DBZ fans without a DVD player.
What I mean is that Funi's dubbed, cut DBZ tapes, are...well, censored & have the crappy new music, Funi's dubbed, uncut tapes, have more violence, but the dialogue has still been chopped up and still have the crappy new music, but Funi's DVD DBZ has a subtitled version with the dialogue & original music still intact. Problem: many people like me have no DVD player. Only other option for getting true uncut DBZ: track down illegal, difficult to find fansubbed videos.
Do you think I'm gonna waste my time doing that?! Hell, no! I just forget Funi's damn American DBZ, and get a better anime like Ranma Nibunnoichi or Rurouni Kenshin!
And remember, I'm not just comparing the DBZ versions, I'm comparing Funi's crap DBZ with GOOD anime brought to America.

And actually the censored nudity was done by Cartoon Network for Tenchi, wasnt it? I dont know if it's censored on the tapes as well, but I know it aint on the DVD! 8)

At least Cartoon Network did a good job with the censoring. It took me a bit before I realized that Ryoko & Aeka's bathing suits weren't real in Tenchi Muyo. In the swimsuit contest, I never noticed Nagi's suit was censored a bit until I saw the video box with the picture of her on it! I was wondering why Ryoko & Aeka was saying she had such an impressive body with that unrevealing one piece!
I wonder if the American DBZ would be so bad if Viz did the dubbing, and Cartoon Network did the little neccessary editing to have it aired on TV... Hmmm...

technically, i don't think there is any nudity in tenchi. i've seen a lot of pics, & there were never any nipples on the naked girls! they'd be fully un-clothed, but i don't thinkthe animators actually drew nipples to begin with! since there's no nipples, or ahem, "private parts" there technically is no nudity. i think.

And I suppose that they celebrate Christmas in Japan. Ive seen plenty of Christmas in anime (X-mas Pokemon ep, tons of X-mas Tenchi pics, even a couple X-mas Ranma ½ songs)... But I dont know about all of Japan... Im not to sure if followers of Shintoism do...

? Actually, I'm trying to write it as "Handsome Boy of the Future." Scott Prower said "Bishounen no Mirai" was the equivalent of your translation. My Japanese sucks, so I just try to get it right, and then let people revise it. (Damn cheap school with no Japanese program...)

I live in a small town, in the middle area of the crappiest state in the United States. (Hint: It's called the "Garden State," and is famous for its tomatoes and traffic jams.) I'm the only true shounen otaku (male anime fan) in my grade, and the only one in my middle school with any true talent in drawing anime. (I use some anime/video game characters, but in original situations, poses, and often designs, while the few other shounen wannabe otaku only copy DBZ pics they got from the Internet.)
I go to a school with very weird peers who try to have a yaoi (boy+boy) relationship with me. (Weirdos...) I'm rather smart, and my only intelligence rival is this obnoxious pipsqueek with a "Napoleon complex," named Scott Rein. Although he seems smart, he's very immature, and possibly gay because of how much he tries to hug me all the time. HE EVEN PROPOSED TO MARRY ME ONCE!!! WITH A REAL RING, EVEN! Scott Rein-san wa baka okama...
