Er, oop? Dang. Digimon Emp, I still don't think you could pull it off. This MB is much bigger than Area 51, and pal, you wouldn't be deciding what board we were using anyway. It'd be phpbb.

I'll start ya off with a YaBBSE and transfer you over to a PHPBB when I have time; I'm going to find a template now =P

Yes.
O_o I VERY MUCH doubt that you could handle hosting the MC 24/7, and it's really up to Kulock where we get hosted.
Plus... that just means more board-hopping, and, frankly, yeech. =P

Perhaps.. if DE is so trusted, he could talk that with Kulock.
MB's space host + DE's proposal = more bandwith.

yeah...
I think we'd be able to stay online if we just don't attempt upon an AHWG thread anymore, and have all images hosted elsewhere.
... And maybe, as a last resort, DE could host the oekaki.
This having 2 benefits:
- Using bandwidth that normally would be used for oekaki for the board, making it less likely to be pulled again
- The Oekaki being on a different server, people can still go there, even if the board is down.
This idea coming from a comment by Sestren in my livejournal, something along the lines of "Just my luck, the board down means the oekaki down as well, just as I wanted to draw something..."
But, it all depends on Ku, of course. So I guess we just wait it out.

DE's ploy
You'll never get 24/7 out of an amateur host. It's simply impossible. No home user has a PC as stable as a multi-mirrored, multi-power-supplied, multi-processor king-size deluxe super happy burger professional Webserver.
Any of us can build a "webserver", but it'll run out of memory, just randomly crash, whatever's blowing in the wind at the time.
Also, the MC is BIG. Who knows how much bandwidth goes in and out at the peak hours?
DE's ploy is "infinite", but he doesn't have infinite. If a big, professional hosting service kicked us out in half a month, who's to say if his ISP gets mad? Besides that, cable is unstable bandwidth. Sure, he's got 3.5 offpeak, but once everyone in his local area kicks in with their illegal Kazaa downloading (;p), suddenly there's only 1, or less then 1 mbps.
And of course, lest we forget the failures I speak of. One network card, one processor, one harddrive... if any of those go for any reason at all, you're shutdown, and unless DE has resource and/or money, you might be out for days, weeks.
I can at least promise that I have a basement FILLED with junked computers, I could have a webserver built and functional in a day, so if I were (and I already said I won't), I at least can guarentee some amount of "95% uptime".
Also, the random crashes; maybe it happens right after he goes to bed. Or after he goes to school. Who's going to be there to reset it when it needs it?
Finally, performance level. Even if all other factors are negliable, what about the core unit's performance? Can it handle several hundred accesses at once? Will it bog down?
Anyway other then ALL of that, theoretically Kulock can just copy all the board's scripts and information databases out and put them on DE's, if such an agreement were made. ;p

Re: DE's ploy
H: CML did a little test on a different phpBB, and I honestly don't think that a AHWG style thread is the problem at all. It's the same as 50 others posts, it's just all under one header. There's no file size 'bloating' or anything from it. Now, it does slightly promote spamming (somewhat anyway), but that's the only problem I can see with it.
And in other news, within a day, Sz gets new webspace, again from a friend.

Re: DE's ploy
Sz is absolutely correct. I said that before. So long as all of us were permnantly stuck on the 25 posts-per-page thing... there is no transfer difference. But as usual, no one cares or everyone misses it when I say it. ;P

Re: Well, isn't this awkward. o.o;
I appreciate the suggestions, Squiggles, but I know that hosting the images remotely could potentially get a bit messy. It would be slower to load, I THINK (stressing that) because of the extra HTTP request as opposed to continuing the crurent request with a local URL (I can't remember where, but something I read a long time ago talked about that, it may be off-base, but it's something along those lines and one of the reasons I started using local URLs in the first place). I did do it before with the buttons for this forum, but it just shouldn't be necessary, anyway.
I'm just going to negotiate with them and see about purchasing another 8 Gig per month on top of my current 8 Gig. It just looks like it's going to be necessary.

Great, Squiggles sent a Czech by mistake...
Got their response about it, $1.75 per Gig. Times 8, times 12. Not pretty. Going to do a bit of haggling or something, because it's more expensive to buy it seperately than to get another account at "Expert" or something.
...I COULD conceivably get that extra account (that will be putting off any chances of a Cable modem for a while longer for me, though) and relegate Hoaxes and the Oekaki to it while leaving the MB on this one. The trouble is I'd rather have one uber-account with 16 Gig of bandwidth than two with 8, because there's that extra slack if one's used less and one's used more, and I could conceivably lock one off for the rest of the month if the bandwidth is getting too high for it for a brief while and have that slack the other bits. I don't know, I guess I'm going to do some chatting. I was hoping the numbers would be approximately $1.00 per Gig, not $1.75.

Re: Well, isn't this awkward. o.o;
That's not much to worry about. I'm sure that, given the chance, we could donate more than enough money to pay for the extra space. After all, you're doing this for us, so it's only fair that we at least try to do something in return. I know I'd be more than happy to donate. (I can see it now, "Mom, can I send money to someone who I don't even know very well so I can continue to waste my free time in front of the computer?")

Well, looks like it's back to Flying Fox for the moment.
I also have 56k by the way.

Re: Bored??
I think the best move would be remote linking. And Ku, I really can't believe that that little tidbit you posted about is anything major. As long as you're getting files from the same place, whether you're remotely linking or not, it shouldn't matter. The only reason it would create a slight problem is that you'd be recalling information from a different server. But that problem would be a one time thing (for each page with files remotely linked).
So I do think that doing that is the best way to go, rather than throwing a bunch of money out there to get a bunch of extra bandwidth.
But then that's just my opinion

Re: Bored??
Actually, I took a look through the bandwidth listings, the images were practically nothing. The real pulls were ViewTopic.php and ViewForum.php. Can't exactly remote link those. ;D
I think it split to be around 5 Gig for the Forums, 3 Gig for the Oekaki. Respectable numbers. I just obviously figured it too low, although I'm kind of shocked it's still that much. But it didn't seem like Verse were doing anything awry, nor would they have any reason to, so there you go. I wanted to move the automated hoaxes over to that account, as well, and that's definitely going to scarf up the bandwidth, so getting the extra would be a good idea, anyway.

Ku: Ah, so my initial response was correct, and my changed opinion was wrong.
Darned opinion changers. ;)
And yeah, if it's around 3 gigs for the Oekaki, then... Well, moving it seems the best option
