Get Internet/Get Xbox
My U.S. friend just signed up for this DSL service, and he got a free Xbox. No @#%$, no strings.
www.speakeasy.net/dsl/ch/4433-15809
I don't know if Kulock will allow this or call it an ad, it's just really a good deal.

Nah, I'm not complaining.
I filled out the checking thing, but it didn't say anything on the next page, maybe it does it via e-mail... Just as well, most of the time the automated checks can't work out my address, and just spit back a "No" because it's not recognized.

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
I think it's politely hinting to me that DSL is not available in my area. >_< Darn it, what's a Moogle got to do to not go insane on the net anymore? I'm literally crippled, especially with all of the virused e-mails I've had to DL lately before my virus scanner grabs them, I have to DL it just to delete it, and I get so many...
Oh, and *Gasp* Look who I found on the Testimonials page! Surely no one else has ever used that combination of two letters before!

"I recently switched both my company and my home to Speakeasy, and have been absolutely thrilled with the service. And the switch... to Speakeasy has been a dream come true... the service with Speakeasy has been fast, reliable... and effective!"
Edit: It SAYS they service Ohio, I just wish they had a detailed map of service. I should probably call, I'm liking what I see, and I'm at my wits' end on dial-up anymore...

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
Quote: The DSL probably sucks
Their standard packages state 1.5/128, which is 1.5mbps [potential] downstream and 128kbps upstream [nasty lock if self-webserving]
That's no better then Verizon or Earthlink speeds. Only after the "special deal" is over with Speakeasy, the bottom package LOOKS like it costs $59.95/mo. I could be wrong since there's an unfulfilled statement of "starting at $49.95". I'll note, that is the standard price of Earthlink at least.
They have some nice things on there though, and are very intent on SHOUTING you can host your own server cheap, and they'll back you until point of abuse, of course.
If I had more money, I'd probably switch to 'em... but right now I'd gain nothing because it'd be either the same cost (*actually, their static IP range price would be able to allow me to kick the dynanmic DNS service fees, hmm) or more, and the same speed. :P
Btw, Kulock, DSL is dependant on your nearest phone swtiching station distance, in case you didn't know. I happen to live within a mere half-mile of a Verizon station, lucky me.
It's just because over raw phone lines, digital signals just plain don't last that long :P
Obviously phone lines were meant for analog, not digital, signals. This stuff is screwing with the old systems, but explains why standard phone modems work virtually anywhere (being digital->analog and analog->digital conversion devices, albeit making for incredibly slow transmission)

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
I understand why and how DSL is available, I'm just saying my address can be interpretted and abbreviated in many ways, and so it's not easy finding the "magic" version for these checkers. I tried getting it from the USPS.gov website, but DSLreports.com wouldn't take it. That's just an example.
And I'm hoping there's a DSL-capable switching station somewhere close. If not, I'll just have to do cable or satellite or something, and the latter is heavy for initial equipment costs. Plus I know what happens to my TV signal (Dish Network, Dish 500) during certain conditions, I wouldn't want that happening to my internet connection. Getting the Xbox on the side would be a nice extra, though.
I'm probably hosed, though. Extremely frustrating. It's not just a luxury for me anymore, I'm having real, significant problems being stuck on narrowband.

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
Nope, not insane. You're lucky you got a good deal for anything decent (there are some "budget" DSL connections AT&T and the like are planning to roll out for cheap that barely top 56k, just for people to free up their phone lines). It's not "insane" when it's all you have access to. You may be in a competitive DSL market, but most places aren't, not enough to drive the price down that far.

That's totally insane. I pay $30 for THREE computers, and it's WAY faster than DSL.

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
DSL's speed varies depending on your distance from the switching station.
Alright, Squiggles, if it's so "insane", what do YOU use then that's "faster than DSL"? Cable?
I called Speakeasy, I just can't get DSL out here, and I've spoken with my dad who's researched it a little before to confirm some suspicions. So I'm basically hosed on ever getting DSL, Cable is unlikely due to my location (and the only one who might conceivably make it out here is the one service I don't want to use)... I had a strong talk with my parents, my only real choice is looking into satellite internet. And berate it all you want, if you can think of a better and available option for a residence in West Jefferson, OH, trust me, I will listen. But if you're just going to spout unreal suggestions ("Daisy-chain sixteen Linux boxes on a wi-fi network" and so on) and slam the only things available out here, that's not going to help. :/
On a side note, that promotion ends after tommorow, so if anyone wants their Xbox (OR PS2, which the promotion can also offer), I suggest you get in touch with them.

Thus my point. I get a better, more rare, more expensive technolagy for $30. And that's for THREE computers. One computer only costs $20.

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
Ah, I see. Yes, Fiber Optic connections are available ALL over the place... that's a big help...
That's nice you _lucked out_. Scrounging for high-speed internet out here is completely different.
Apparently satellite, not only being a significant bit more expensive than the higher-tier cable connections, is also about 1/3rd to 1/4th of the speed, and is often noted that latency issues make it a bad choice for online gaming. Oh joy. I'm just going to try cable more thoroughly again, I gave up on them without checking them out fully because of those stupid online evaluators which... well, I don't know how they maim my poor address. :P But I'm going to give Wide Open West a call. They service New Rome, which is literally about a 14 minute drive from where I live, but unfortunately, they probably don't service out any further.
It's just suddenly become an obvious problem for me, I've felt that way for a while, but now it's been really coming to a figurehead. So pardon my bitchiness over the issue. Having someone gloat about their FO connection isn't much help. ;D Unless they're willing to lay the line all the way out here...

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
My DSL goes faster than it's even listed as. I am unsure where my service station is or how far away it is, but it must be pretty damn close. What do I use? Verizon :O
As for the price upthere, they want 50 bucks a month :/ I only get charged 39.99 O_o; I got on some kinda funky deal where they start at 29.99 for the first three months, and then bump it by 10 more.
But the fact that they give 24/7 service and a free X-Box makes them rather worthy.
And Kulock, get a hotmail addy for those kinda things. That way, they won't screw it up.

Re: Get Internet/Get Xbox
Look, I was trying to make a point. I get a fiber optic connection IN OREGON for $30. Living in Oregon is ALMOST as bad as living in Ohio (I believe that if you don't live in california, you're nuts, so I could have said that about almost any state except California, no offence). And out here, is the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE I can get Fiber Optics for $30. You should be able to get broadband fot $30 OR LESS.
As for how they get your address, it's all in your IP.
And don't get a hotmail address. It's a horrible service.

"You should be able to get broadband fot $30 OR LESS."
Should, but thanks to the phone switching station out here, can't.
"And don't get a hotmail address. It's a horrible service."
I have one, but it's moot anyway, I mean my _postal_ address, which is long and abbrivated in many, many ways, and finding which one that company's DB will accept is the fun part.

I think there's some new optic broadband connection being developed in sweden... They claimed it was 1000 times faster than the current broadband.
