Nintendo/Rare
On TSSZ:
Quote: The official statement from Nintendo that you all may have, or may not have been waiting for.
Nintendo Cuts Development Ties with Rare, Ltd.
Decision Reflects Strategic Move To Expand And Redirect Game Development
LONDON--Sept. 20, 2002--As part of a strategic redirection of its game development investments, Nintendo announces it has sold its 49 percent ownership position in U.K.-based developer Rare, Ltd.
"Nintendo had the ability to continue its exclusive relationship with Rare, but in looking at the company's recent track record, it became clear that its value to the future of Nintendo would be limited," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "In other words, we passed on this opportunity for very good business reasons."
In fiscal year 2001, Rare accounted for only 9.5 percent of total Nintendo software sales worldwide. In fiscal year 2002, that number declined to 1.5 percent.
Nintendo will retain exclusive rights for all original properties and franchises featured in games developed by Rare, including Donkey Kong(R), Diddy Kong(R) and Star Fox(R).
According to MacDougall, game development is, by nature, dynamic. Relationships continually change to meet the needs of both manufacturers and publishers. "The disposition of this investment leaves us in a position to become even more aggressive in expanding our development capacity, both internally and externally. Aside from several partnerships already announced over the past year, we are currently in similar talks with several other prospective partners around the world."
In the past year, Nintendo has added emphasis on games which offer true innovation to video game players, and especially those with appeal to older players. Key current and upcoming NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) titles include Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM), Animal Crossing(TM), Metroid(R) Prime, The Legend of Zelda(R) and Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil series exclusively for NINTENDO GAMECUBE.
"Although we declined the opportunity to continue our exclusive agreement with Rare, this announcement does not diminish our respect for their work or the past contributions they have made to Nintendo," adds MacDougall.
As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.6 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.
For more information about NINTENDO GAMECUBE or any other Nintendo product visit the company's Web sites, www.nintendo.com or www.nintendogamecube.com.
Well, at least they kept the franchises.

Re: Nintendo/Rare
Well, It was stupid. They should have totallly bought out Rare, transferred all the franchises and then sold it directly to Mirosoft. A PD game for the Box could spell some trouble for Nintendo. However, I'm glad tha the N is ousting Rare. All their fabulous successes (including all three Donkey Kong Country Games and all older games) were nillified with the failure that was DK 64. I don't want them messing up any more franchises. I'm really hesitent to Play Dinosaur Planet.

Re: Nintendo/Rare
I'm not, unless 90% of the game is actually the "Zoom in to 1stish person and fire Staff shots", like they so love. I have enjoyed Rare's games here or there, but it's not a huge loss to see them go. Their greatest mistake was not doing much GC work before going, so at this point, we've seen so little of Rare, we don't care if they go. SFA may change that some (I doubt NCL would ever make a blue fox girl in skimpy dress or hide "ARSE" in a password entry screen's letter selection, for starters, part of Rare's "attitude"), but for the most part, they went so dead silent, and refused to comment on the floods and floods of rumors, we really don't care about hearing about them go anymore.
I have a feeling that I'll like SFA, though. Shame they won't be able to do a SFA2. I can see it now, two warriors battling it out on a stormy field, Dan on one side and Dark Ryu on the oth- er, wrong SFA2...

Re: Nintendo/Rare
SFA is going to suck.
And It does! EGM gave it a horrible 4.5!

Re: Nintendo/Rare
*blinks* You've got to be kidding me, a 4.5?
Pfft, even if it was one of Rare's collect-o-fests, from what I've seen it deserves much better than that.

Re: Nintendo/Rare
What? The SFA demo I played was really good. o_O
My only question is -- IGN, like us, got previous builds to play around with, right? Demos, etc, to make previews and screenshots out of. Why on earth did they bother saying how cool everything was if they were just gonna give it a crap review?
Wouldn't that be a direct sign of bias? Or at least, something very fishy... "Hypehypehypehypehype..! WHAT A PEICE OF CRAP!"

Re: Nintendo/Rare
Ah, and interestingly, I just got my issue of EGM today (really thick, too!)
Only ONE person gave it a 4.5, the other two reviewers gave it high marks (8.0 and 9.0).
Chris, the 4.5'er, cites
"It's fresh visuals are quickly spoiled by the same old collect-a-bunch-of-items-ad-nauseum gameplay Rare's recycled for years."
and "SFA's boring, tensionless story doesn't help matters either, and the lack of help for puzzles makes them more frusterating than fun."
"Not even the flying bits save this from mediocrity -- they're short and feel tacked on."
Even goes so far to say everyone should skip SFA entirely and just hold tight until Zelda.
The other two (Shane and Milkman) go on, "It's a bizarre mishmash of clashing styles, concepts, and gameplay, that, despite being all over the map, is still a must play title."
"The later level designs and bosses totally make up for the dull opening sections."
"While it doesn't break new ground, the excecution is impeccable."
"SF gives you plenty of cool things to do in this sprawling epic."
"Only a few years ago visuals like these would pass for a Pixar movie."
"Clunky interface issues aside, SFA is a stunning addition to the series."
All adds up to an average of 7.1, and earlier in the issue they say their average is 5, so SFA rates as "Above average"

So in other words, they all said the same thing, except that one of them made it sound bad and the others made it sound good. Typical game reviewer behavior. (j/k)
