Data Center Facilities Manager

Positions available in Atlanta, GA and the Pacific Northwest.

Google is looking for an experienced data center facilities manager to provide day-to-day oversight and management of a Google-operated data center facility. This individual will act as the interface between teams at Google headquarters, the local contractors and employees responsible for maintenance and operation of the facility (including electrical systems, mechanical systems, security contractors, janitorial services, and all other aspects of data center facility operation), and the Google team responsible for installation and operation of servers within the data center. This position will ensure the ongoing flawless operation of the data center, will ensure that facilities problems are identified and repaired quickly, will ensure that contractors are delivering quality services, and will make sure that all internal customer demands are being met. This individual will work to find creative ways to keep operational costs to a minimum and will work outside of the box with team members to improve efficiency and implement new data center strategies.

Requirements:
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a facilities manager or chief engineer at a medium or large data center facility (ideally in excess of 50,000 square feet of raised floor).
  • An undergraduate degree in an appropriate technical field.
  • A very good understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in use in a data center environment including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, chillers, air handling units, and CRAC units. An ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with contractors performing maintenance or upgrade work on systems installed in a data center environment.
  • A great attitude with internal customers and external parties, excellent written and verbal communications skills, stellar Internet and computing skills, and the ability to provide leadership and oversight to the facilities team employed at the data center.
  • The ability to learn quickly, work autonomously, and address any issues that arise day-or-night. A willingness to provide on call support in case of emergencies or other off-hours issues at the facility.
  • Previous management and project management experience.

Data Center Facilities Technician

Positions available in Atlanta, GA and the Greater Portland Area, OR.

Google seeks experienced facilities technicians to operate, monitor, and support data centers. Working under the direction of the Data Center Facilities Manager, facilities technicians interact with support teams at Google headquarters and with local contractors and vendors. They operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems, such as electrical, mechanical, and building monitoring and control. Additional responsibilities include tracking and trending operational characteristics.

Technicians must ensure that facilities problems are identified and repaired quickly, that contractors deliver quality services, and that internal customer demands are met. A good technician develops creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.

These positions require on-call rotating shifts that include weekends and holidays.

Requirements:
  • Two or more years at journeyman or technician level, or the equivalent, in a critical environment such as a hospital, power plant, or data center. Preference given to data center experience.
  • Ten or more years in mechanical/HVAC, electrical, or a combination of both. Mechanical applicants must have or obtain a universal refrigerant handler's certification. Electrical applicants must have or obtain licensing if required by the local jurisdiction.
  • An associate’s degree, trade school certification, or other verifiable training in a relevant technical field.
  • Excellent understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, chillers, air handling units, and CRAC units. Ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on these systems.

Data Center Technician

Positions located in Atlanta, GA / Chicago, IL / Greater Portland Area, OR / Mountain View, CA / Washington, DC.

Google needs your help to build the physical infrastructure behind its powerful search technology.

This is an excellent entry level opportunity for individuals who want to become Linux gurus, system administrators, or network engineers. Work on a team with highly motivated, talented individuals like yourself that are striving each day to advance their Linux, networking, and hardware related skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Install new servers as our Linux cluster grows.
  • Help test and troubleshoot new server hardware components and designs.
  • Install switches, routers, and other networking gear.
  • Fix broken servers (replace hard drives, replace bad sticks of RAM, etc.).
  • Configure and troubleshoot Linux OS related issues on our servers.

Position requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years working with PC hardware.
  • At least one year of Linux experience.
  • Able to lift/move 20-30 lbs equipment on a daily basis.
  • Experience troubleshooting and installing operating systems, networking equipment, and software.
  • AA degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Must provide own transportation to the job site.
  • Oregon position only: 1-3 months of training in a Google Regional Facility before deploying to Oregon site.

Hardware Operations Project Manager

Positions based in Mountain View, CA and Atlanta, GA.

Google is looking for a dynamic professional to manage cross-functional projects within the scope of Operations and IT Production Infrastructure. Working with all organizational levels as well as external vendors you will develop and manage project schedules, identify risks and clearly communicate them to project stakeholders, define problem solving and risk mitigation strategies, and facilitate conflict resolution through the full project cycle. You will oversee the compilation and analysis of project activity and will deliver statistical data/reports on a project's feasibility and progress.

A strong background in IT infrastructure, technology development/deployment or computing sciences is essential for your success in this position. You must have a proven track record of project completion that is on time and within budget.

Responsibilities:
  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science or Engineering or a minimum of BA/BS and 4 years in an IT-related field.
  • 2+ years of Linux system administration.
  • 2+ years of experience with data center infrastructure.
  • 2+ years of technical project management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to work effectively with all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated skills in requirements gathering, resource organization, project/task prioritization and schedule development.

Logistics Specialist

Google is looking for a logistics specialist to work within our Hardware Operations team. The person selected for this role will play a critical role in the deployment of Google computing resources throughout the world.

Operations:
  • Work with international and domestic carriers to resolve shipping problems and expedite shipments.
  • Estimate costs and arrange shipments with freight shippers and forwarders.
  • Handle necessary shipping and customs documentation to ensure on-time deliveries.
  • Coordinate all aspects of logistics on both shipping and receiving end.
Process Development:
  • Help determine and implement best logistics processes for Google to improve operational efficiencies while reducing costs.
  • Work with shippers to develop new and/or alternate transportation strategies.
  • Monitor performance and compliance of all service providers.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years experience working in Logistics, preferably in a manufacturing environment.

Operations Technician, Google Print

This is a long-term temporary assignment at Google through ABE Services. ABE Services

Position based in Mountain View, CA.

Entry to mid-level position required to build and support physical infrastructure for scanning operations.

General:
  • Successful candidate will perform the responsibilities of installation, preventative maintenance, and repair of our equipment at scanning locations.
Responsibilities include:
  • Diagnose and repair equipment failures:
    • Oncall support.
    • Track using repair ticket system.
  • Install scripts and other software as needed.
  • Build-out and maintain all hardware equipment.
    • Perform planned preventative maintenance activities.
  • Track failure rates and maintain spares logs.
  • Set-up and maintain computer equipment.
  • Support offsite locations with either visits or remote support.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years experience working in Logistics, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
