Google Announces New Corporate Search Products

Google Search Appliance Offers New Secure Search Capabilities, Increased Performance and New Hardware: New Customers in Government, Health, Education and Biotech

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. -- Sept. 30, 2002 -- Google Inc. today announced updates to its corporate search technology that enable IT administrators to easily deploy search services in secure computing environments, with fresher results and increased index capacity. Google also announced the GB-5005, a new Google Search Appliance hardware model designed for organizations that require a highly available dedicated search service of up to 3 million documents.

The Google Search Appliance is an integrated corporate search solution that extends Google's award-winning search technology to intranets and websites.

Demonstrating its ongoing momentum in corporate search, Google announced new Google Search Appliance customers in the government, health, education and biotech markets. New customers include the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, U.S. Department of Education, the California Department of Transportation, the state of Indiana, Kaiser Permanente, University of Michigan College of Engineering, Medtronic Inc., and others.

"The Google Search Appliance enables our state government portals to offer the world's best search results with an affordable and easy-to-use product," said Jeff Fraser, CEO of eGovernment firm NIC. "Citizens and businesses seek a wide range of information when they visit a state government web site, and Google is helping constituents find what they need with fast and thorough search results. Google is helping to improve the efficiency of online government for Indiana and several of our other state partners."

New enhancements to the Google Search Appliance family of products include:

  • Searching secure content: The Google Search Appliance now enables users to search secure information protected by basic authentication or Microsoft NTLM. All documents from protected web servers are kept securely within the Google Search Appliance. Users performing searches only see documents to which they have access authorization in the search results.

  • Fresh results: Google's GB-5005 and the GB-8008 can now perform incremental updates that enable the administrator to create two layers of searchable information: A fast changing top layer for important documents, updated hourly, and a larger, base layer that can be updated every day.

  • Increased capacity: The GB-8008 can now search up to 7 million documents from a single query, an increase of 75 percent over the previous software version. Increased capacity makes it possible for administrators to greatly speed the time required to deliver search results to the user.

  • New Hardware (GB-5005): The GB-5005 contains five clustered servers and is ideal for dedicated, high-priority search services such as customer-facing websites and company-wide intranet applications. The GB-5005 is the latest addition to Google's family of corporate search products that includes the affordable GB-1001 for departments and mid-sized companies, and the GB-8008 for centralized deployments supporting global business units.

"The Google Search Appliance takes the hassle and expense out of organizing corporate information," said Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's vice president of Product Management. "Google is applying its innovative search technology to the difficult challenge of making corporate information access simple. With the latest release of the Google Search Appliance, corporate customers can reliably and easily deliver secure access to the most current information for all their end users."

Additional Google Search Appliance customers include: ActivBiotics, Riverdeep Inc., ConocoPhillips, New York University, Seattle University, and Societe Generale.

The Google Search Appliance is offered on a try-before-you-buy basis that enables customers to compare the quality of Google's search results against other solutions for four weeks, before making a purchase decision. Purchasers of the Google Search Appliance receive two years of software updates plus hardware and software support. More information can be found at www.google.com/appliance.
