NEC Selects Google to Provide Search Services on Japan's Leading BIGLOBE Portal Site
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - December 18, 2000 - Google Inc., developer of the award-winning Google search engine, today announced that it has been selected by NEC Corp. to provide web and site search services to NEC's BIGLOBE portal site and related online properties. BIGLOBE, one of Japan's largest Internet access providers, will also have access to Google's Japanese language index, which contains more than 38 million pages of Japan-specific information. BIGLOBE is the first Japanese Internet access provider to incorporate Google's search services into its site.
Google's web search services enable BIGLOBE users to access the more than 1.3 billion web pages contained in Google's search engine index, the largest available on the World Wide Web. In addition, Google's site search service enables visitors to efficiently navigate information contained specifically on the BIGLOBE site.
Under the terms of the agreement, Google is also providing custom search services to BIGLOBE to enable visitors to search for information specific to Japan. With more than 38 million pages, Google's Japan-specific index gives BIGLOBE visitors a fast, highly relevant source for answering queries related to Japan.
"As the leading provider of search on the web, Google stands apart from other search engines with its effectiveness, index scale and system availability," said Saburo Takizawa, General Manager, Personal BIGLOBE Services Division, NEC Corporation. "Its outstanding Japan-specific index adds highly recognizable value, making BIGLOBE the premier portal destination for all Japanese information needs."
"Google's agreement with BIGLOBE is a significant step in the expansion of our services to customers around the world," said Larry Page, Google's CEO and co-founder. "We're excited about this new relationship with one of the leading Internet providers in Japan and we look forward to working closely with BIGLOBE to deliver the highest quality search experience to its users."
"We attribute much of our phenomenal growth to the large number of users who are recommending Google to a friend," said Sergey Brin, president and cofounder of Google. "This measurement is a magnificent reward for our continued obsession with creating the best user experience possible."
Google currently licenses its search services to more than 130 companies in more than 30 countries. Customers include Yahoo! and its international properties; Virgilio, one of the leading portals in Italy; and NetEase, one of the largest portals in China. In addition to its growing roster of international companies, the Google search engine is available in 25 languages, including Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.
